TINs are typically used for high-precision modeling of smaller areas, such as in engineering applications, where they are useful because they allow calculations of planimetric area, surface area, and volume. The maximum allowable size of a TIN varies relative to free, contiguous memory resources.
The triangulated irregular network data model, called TIN, is an alternative to the raster data model for representing continuous surfaces. It allows surface models to be generated efficiently to analyze and display terrain and other types of surfaces. It is a special type of vector data model.
A triangular irregular network (TIN) layer is commonly an elevation surface that represents height values across an extent.
As a result, a TIN represents a more complex data structure. This complexity does have advantages, as TINs can be used to characterize linear features such as coast-lines and rivers more accurately than grids. TINs also require fewer points than raster files to represent the land surface (El-Shrimy et al., 2005).
The TIN interpolation produces a more realistic visual representation, while the multiquadric radial basis function generates more accurate representation and measurement of slope.
Because nodes can be placed irregularly over a surface, TINs can have a higher resolution in areas where a surface is highly variable and a lower resolution in areas that are less variable. The input features used to create a TIN remain in the same position as the nodes or edges in the TIN.
