When using the authors original words, we can give credit to the author by using a tag or signal phrase. The tag may be placed at the beginning, middle, or end of the quotation. Correct use of Signal Phrases: A tag such as states often introduces the quotation and is followed by a comma.
The question is: does the punctuation go inside or outside the final quotation mark? The rule is: If the quoted words end with a full stop (or comma), then the full stop goes inside the quotation marks. If the quoted words do not end with a full stop, then the full stop goes outside the quotation marks.
The subject of the sentence should use the name of the person who said the quote. Incorrect: In Jane Smiths book about pets, she claims that people who own dogs have lower levels of stress. Correct: In her book about pets, Jane Smith claims that people who own dogs have lower levels of stress.
When you include quoted material or dialogue in a sentence then you should precede it with a comma unless it fits into the flow of the sentence seamlessly, e.g. The President said that there is no smoking gun to be found.
Also, notice that commas and periods go inside quotation marks UNLESS the quotation is followed by an in-text citation, in which case the comma or period is placed after the citation. Example: Bates writes, The results are inconclusive. One author writes, The results are inconclusive (Bates).
Periods or commas: Place them inside of the quotation marks, unless there is a citation immediately following. Example: Unlike Kate Chopins The Story of an Hour, her novel The Awakening was popular in class. Example: Alexie describes the towns sign as reading, Welcome to Wellpinit, Population: Variable (3).
Embedding a quotation means that the quotation is included in a single sentence with many of your own words and commentary. The most sophisticated embedded quotations have commentary before and after the words you are quoting (see example #3).
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
