The inside is where you do most of your living. As such, its important to take time to select the right interior stains and finishes for your log and timber home. In this way, you will achieve an interior that is visually pleasing and performs well for years.
In most cases, we recommend removing the old stain or coating by blasting the logs or wood with crushed glass. This media is as fine as table salt, silica free and 100% environmentally friendly. Once the old coatings are removed and the logs are brought down to bare wood, a new stain can be applied.
Choose a high-quality stain designed for log homes or cabins. We love to use the Sherwin Williams product Superdeck Oil Stain. There are two types of stains available: water-based and oil-based. Water-based stains are easier to clean up and dry more quickly than oil-based stains.

Most log home stains are semi-transparent to show off the wood grain. Remember too, the darker the stain you use and can enjoy, the longer it will hold up to the suns UV damage. If you want a more cost-effective approach, you can use a solid color latex stain.
For deeply penetrating wood stains that are clinging to the wood, bleach can be an effective removal option. Refrain from using wood bleaches or two-part bleaches, as these will alter the woods natural color.
Moisture will build up inside and voila, you have yourself a rot spot. Additionally, logs retain a certain level of moisture which would get trapped by the paint. Stain on the other hand, allows the logs to breathe while still repelling moisture. This is why stain is more suitable for log homes.
There are basically two types of finishes we recommend semitransparent and solid body stains. The type of finish chosen depends upon the log homes specific wood, the appearance the homeowner desires, and the level of maintenance that is acceptable to the homeowner.
