hi Im Amy welcome to I teach with Amy today were going to learn about embedded clauses before we get started lets remind ourselves what we learned in our last lesson we learn about clauses a Clause must need a subject and a verb we also learn about dependent clauses and independent clauses a dependent clause has a subject and a verb but is not a complete thought and usually starts with a subordinating conjunction an independent clause can stand alone it doesnt need a dependent clause it usually has a subject and a verb and can be a standalone sentence okay so lets get started an embedded clause is a clause that sits in between a independent clause its a dependent clause its usually marked with two commas it has a subject and a verb and adds more information to your sentence take a look at this sentence my dad likes sandwiches in this sentence the sentence doesnt give us much information about my dad at all however if we add an embedded clause we will be able to add more informa

Lets illustrate a subordinate clause in a sentence: I played out until it went dark. The phrase until it went dark is the subordinate clause because it requires additional information in order to make sense.
However the embedded clause is reliant on the main clause so it does not make sense on its own (its a subordinate clause). For example: The coat, which was old, had a hole in the pocket. The main clause makes sense on its own: The coat had a hole in the pocket.
When a subordinate clause begins a sentence, it has a comma after it. When the main clause begins the sentence, there is no comma to separate it from the dependent clause. If I can find my wallet we can all go for ice cream. We can all go for ice cream, if I can find my wallet.
Coordination and subordination join two sentences with related ideas. Coordination joins sentences with related and equal ideas, whereas subordination joins sentences with related but unequal ideas. Sentences can be coordinated using either a coordinating conjunction and a comma or a conjunctive adverb and a semicolon.
Example sentences using a subordinate clause If you win the award, I will buy you a new video game. Since the sun will shine today, we will go to the beach. When she was sick, her teacher gave the exam. Because mom said so, I apologized to Cecilia.
A subordinate or dependent clause will begin with a conjunction (e.g. because, after, since, whether, while) or a pronoun (e.g. that, who, which). This combination of words will not form a complete sentence. It will instead make a reader want more information to finish the thought.
How to Use Subordination. Example: Because she got home late, she missed her dinner. Pattern: Because dependent clause, independent clause. Using coordination would show a weaker relationship: She got home late, and she missed her dinner.
Subordinating conjunctions signaling relationships of time or place. Another function of subordinating conjunctions is to show a relationship between two clauses involving a transition of time or place. Some examples of such subordinating conjunctions are once, while, when, whenever, where, wherever, before, and after.
