It needs to be embedded into an existing sentence that is written in your own words. Use a signal phrase. A signal phrase includes the name of the author and either ing to or a signal verb. A signal phrase ends with a comma, unless it comes at the end of the sentence.
To cite a source from a secondary source, mention both the original and secondary sources in the text, and list only the secondary source in the works-cited list entry. MLA requires you to use the abbreviation qtd. in (quoted in) before the indirect source you cite in your parenthetical reference.
Use a colon when the words introducing the quotation form a complete sentence, when you are introducing a verse quotation, or when a longer quotation is set off from the text. Use no punctuation when the quoted words form part of the sentence. Or: She told the readers that this abomination could not continue.
Practically speaking, embedding a quotation means placing a quotation within our own sentence of analysis. Lets use the example of the natural setting in the picture below, and a line of text used to describe it: The blue bay was nestled between emerald cliffs.
Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original. Harriet Jacobs writes, She sat down, quivering in every limb (61).
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
Embedding a quotation means that the quotation is included in a single sentence with many of your own words and commentary. The most sophisticated embedded quotations have commentary before and after the words you are quoting (see example #3).
The following general steps address how to properly integrate a quotation into an essay. Step 1: Introduce the Author of the Quotation. Step 2: State the Quotation. Step 3: Summarize the Quotation. Step 4: Analyze the Quotation. Step 5: State the Quotations Relevance to Your Argument.
