Will always be separate. And the icon next to your layer will look like a little link chain. So in this scenario.
Adding Video and Photos in Photoshop Drag video or photo into Photoshop. Right click on the layer once its in Photoshop and select Duplicate Layer. A duplicate layer box will appear, in Destination select the document youd like your video or photo to be in.

Thats the difference between opening an image and placing an image in Photoshop. Use the Open command when all you have is a single image or you want to open multiple images in separate documents. And use Place Embedded to place an image into an existing document.
An embedded Smart Object has no connection with the original source image once its placed into a Photoshop document. On the other hand, when you add a Linked Smart Object to a Photoshop document, that linked layer or layers are still connected to the original document.
Embedding takes the placed content and puts the entirety of it within your working file. Pros: The content is a persistent part of your working file. Cons: It can greatly increase your filesize. If the original placed file is changed later, the version you placed will not reflect those changes.
To embed an image from another location, go to File Place Embedded. Remember that if you edit the original image youve linked to, you will update it where its linked as well.
If embedded, the asset is contained in the Photoshop file. If it is linked, then the asset is external to the PS file and is only called when you open the file. Suppose you bring a PNG image into a PS file. It is now a new layer within the PS file. Suppose it is not embedded but linked.
