alright let's talk about the art of embedding quotations okay first let's look at the anatomy of a quote this isn't even a real quote it's just what it might look like says this right here is a lot of context leading up to the quote and if the quote is actual dialogue the speaker the exact words you've taken from the text citation here's what's in there first you've got some context that's leading up to the quote and that's a background information then usually there's gonna be a comma right before the quote begins after that you have the quote and it opens and ends with quotation marks that look like that and finally you have the citation which comes in parentheses after the quote so that's all the pieces that go into embedding a quote your job is to find the art of avoiding a quote dump which looks like that that's when you just dump your quote into the writing with no lead-in so here's a quote dump in progress it says you really kissed as cowardly and has a negative effect on the m...

There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
When researching, you may find many instances of a quotation within a quotation (that is, the author you are quoting has quoted another author) in scholarly essays. In this case, you use the single quotation marks () for the quote within the quote.
It typically comes before the quotation but can also come after or even in the middle of it: ing to Gee, One thing we build with language is significance (98). Gee writes, One thing we build with language is significance (98). One thing we build with language is significance, ing to Gee (98).
Double space the quoted text and enclose it in quotation marks. Follow the quotation with a superscript number after the end punctuation that corresponds to CMS-style footnotes or endnotes. Writers do not always need to quote full sentences from a source.
The examples use MLA format. Use a full sentence followed by a colon to introduce a quotation. Begin a sentence with your own words, then complete it with quoted words. Use an introductory phrase naming the source, followed by a comma to quote a critic or researcher.
Use single quotation marks to enclose quotes within another quotation. The reporter told me, When I interviewed the quarterback, he said they simply played a better game.
Quotation marks are ALWAYS used in pairs, one at the beginning of the quoted text and one at the end. The same rule applies to titles and words used in a special sense or for emphasis. Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote.
Use single quotation marks to enclose a direct quotation within another direct quotation. Insert a space between the single and the double quotation. Apply the rules for placement of punctuation provided above. e.g., Dorothy Parker once said, The most beautiful words in the English language are Check enclosed.
The context should set the basic scene for when, possibly where, and under what circumstances the quotation was spoken or written.
Integrating quotations means to weave the authors words into your own sentences. Quotations should not just be thrown into your essay. You may use block quotations in this research paper, but generally do not use them in a standard 2-3 page essay. Use only the best parts of your quotation.
