What are binary questions? A binary question is closed and often only has two possible answers: yes or no. Binary questions are less than ideal because they imply that there are two categories into which the topic can fall, like right or wrong, bad or good, and win or lose.
Dichotomous Questions A dichotomous question allows respondents to provide short, concise, and direct answers in the research questionnaire. Dichotomous questions are used to collect quantitative information from respondents, and to also eliminate unnecessary complexities in data collection.
For example, a good dichotomous question would be, Are you taller than 6 feet? While a bad dichotomous question would be, Do you like the songs in album X? The respondent might not be able to express the way they feel through a Yes/No choice.
Scoring a dichotomous question is easy. All you need to do is tally the Yes and No responses for each of the questions and divide it by the total number of participants. You will get the percentages of Yes and No for every question.
Belonging to the closed-ended family of questions, dichotomous questions are ones that only offer two possible answers, which are typically presented to survey takers in the following format Yes or No, True or False, Agree or Disagree and Fair or Unfair.
What is a Dichotomous Question? Known for offering two possible answer options, a dichotomous question is a popular question type that is often used for screening purposes. By including answer choices like yes/no, true/false, agree/disagree, right/wrong.
The advantages to a Dichotomous Question is that it is quick and does not allow ambivalent answers. However its weakness is that it does not allow for any degree of sensitivity or emotional preference, which is sometimes necessary to research.
A binary question is a closed question with only two answers for example, yes or no. Hidden in the question is an implicit assumption that there are only two categories into which the subject can fall: good or bad, right or wrong, and so on. For example, Am I a good leader?
Dichotomous (outcome or variable) means having only two possible values, e.g. yes/no, male/female, head/tail, age 35 / age
15 (or Likert scale).
