Pictures of all kinds (including tables, charts, graphs, figures, photographs, etc) are useful components in a research paper. This is because of the insight they can bring by complementing verbal discussions and analysis.
There are two ways to organize your images: either place them in your text next to the paragraph where you discuss them (Figure 1), or put them all together at the end of the essay (Figure 2). Images always need captions. Captions should do two things; label the image and tell us the images source.
Images, diagrams and artistic works should be cited as you would cite any other type of work. Note: Images in text are also generally accompanied by a caption that includes copyright information and a statement of permission for use. Please check with your instructor to see if this is necessary.
For the in-text citation for images with no author, use a few of your own words to describe the artwork, and for the date write n.d. (Description of artwork, n.d.) (Drawing of blood flowing, n.d.)
Include information in the following order: author (if available) year produced (if available) title of image (or a description) Format and any details (if applicable) name and place of the sponsor of the source. accessed day month year (the date you viewed/ downloaded the image)
Images, diagrams and artistic works should be cited as you would cite any other type of work. Note: Images in text are also generally accompanied by a caption that includes copyright information and a statement of permission for use. Please check with your instructor to see if this is necessary.
Go to the original location (website) of the image and cite in one of the formats above. Basic Format for Artwork: (Artist Last Name, Year) (Wood, 1930) -parenthetical. Basic Format for Stock Image: (Author, Year) if just referencing in-text. Image With No Author, Title, or Date. (Organization or website title, n.d.)
Image from an Electronic Source creators name (author, artist, photographer etc.) date the work was published or created. title of the work. place of publication. publisher. type of material (for photographs, charts, online images) website address and access date.
Generally, if you want to cite photos or images that were retrieved online in APA format, follow this formula: Last name of creator, First name initial. ( of media]. Ross, B. Last name of creator, First name initial. ( of media]. Klimt, G.
Place small images/illustrations within the text between paragraphs as close as possible to the point where they are first mentioned, but not before your first mention. Larger images (e.g. detailed scatterplot graphs) may need to be separately included on the next nearest full page, appropriately orientated.
