Why are RAW images not sharp?

But its not exactly sharp. Thats because the RAW file is raw. It hasnt had any sharpening applied. While it may be particularly evident in this image, this principle applies to every RAW image you shoot. Your images simply arent sharp enough straight out of the camera; they must have sharpness applied.

Should you convert CR2 to DNG?

There are a number of advantages to converting your proprietary raw files (CR2, NEF, etc.) to DNG files, including file size, embedded file verification, future compatibility, and speed. In Lightroom, DNG files open and render previews faster than raw files.

Why do RAW files look flat?

RAW RAW files are unprocessed and un-compressed data files that contain all of the image information available to the camera sensor. Because RAW files are unprocessed, they come out looking flat and dark, as you can see above.

Should I convert my raw files to DNG?

DNG files are generally 15-20% smaller than RAW files, but the difference in quality is minimal. A DNG file can also save the original RAW file within itself. This doubles the size, but is also a nice safeguard. DNG files also strip out select information to decrease the size and simplify storage and editing.

Can you convert DNG back to RAW?

It is not possible to convert and docHub DNG file to a proprietary raw capture format. However, if you embedded the original raw capture in the DNG file, you can use the docHub DNG Converter application to extract that embedded raw capture. This would be done using the DNG Converter directly, outside of Lightroom.

Why does RAW look worse than JPEG?

Its because when you shoot in JPEG mode, your camera applies sharpening, contrast, color saturation, and all sorts of little tweaks to create a fully processed, good-looking final image.
