The study of inscriptions is called Epigraphy. Epigraphy is a branch of archaeology, which is the study of inscriptions or epigraphs that have been engraved into durable materials, such as stone or cast in metal.

Traditionally, Roman inscriptions were addressed to the Manes, the spirits of the dead who were thought to still reside in or around the tomb. Following this opener, often abbreviated to D M (Dis Manibus), inscriptions recorded the name, age, and other information about the deceased.
ORC (sometimes called capital cursive) was dominant during the first three centuries AD. In the late third century it was replaced by NRC (sometimes called minuscule cursive). Roman writing materials can be classed as hard or soft.
The Duenos inscription is one of the earliest known Old Latin texts, variously dated from the 7th to the 5th century BC. It is inscribed on the sides of a kernos, in this case a trio of small globular vases adjoined by three clay struts.
