It depends on how much data there is to index, but it really shouldnt take very long. Ive never timed it, but it doesnt take a but a few minutes to index by 100 GB of data.

Spotlight is indexing your files so that when you use it, it will be able to retrieve the data that you are searching for. This is normal after you have installed a new OS.

Fixes for Spotlight indexing slow From the main Apple menu, go to System Settings Siri Spotlight. Click the Spotlight Privacy button at the bottom of the page. To reindex a particular folder or disk, drag its icon into the window of locations that Spotlight is prevented from searching.
