If inflammation (redness) is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
This study shows that, at cervical cancer screening, all women testing positive for HPV regardless of Pap smear result should be referred to colposcopy.
The phrase endocervical cells present simply means that your doctor sampled cells from the inside of your cervix during the Pap smear. The phrase squamous metaplastic cells present means that the pathologist who examined your Pap smear found cells that were growing and repairing themselves regularly.
A positive HPV test means you do have an HPV type that may be linked to cervical cancer. This does not mean you have cervical cancer now. But it could be a warning. The specific HPV type may be identified to determine the next step.
The most common reason for a negative Pap test with a positive HPV result is that the patient has an HPV infection, but the infection is not causing any cellular abnormalities. Cellular abnormalities caused by HPV can be quite focal on the cervix, while the HPV infection can be more widespread.
Purpose of the test It is able to identify cervical cancer early, as well as changes in cervical cells that may become cancerous if not treated. When used as a screening test, a Pap smear may be used alone or along with a test for strains of human papillomavirus (HPV) that can cause cervical cancer.
HPV found with no cell changes - means you have high-risk HPV, but you do not have changes to your cervical cells. So you will be invited for cervical screening sooner to check that the HPV has gone. This usually after a year.
Positive HPV test. It doesnt mean that you have cervical cancer now, but its a warning sign that cervical cancer could develop in the future. Your doctor will probably recommend a follow-up test in a year to see if the infection has cleared or to check for signs of cervical cancer.
