The U.S. Supreme Court publishes its opinions in Century Schoolbook. Likewise, Rule 33(1)(B) of the Supreme Courts Rules states that the text of all major documents, including briefs, shall be typeset in a Century family (e.g., Century Expanded, New Century Schoolbook, or Century Schoolbook) 12-point type.
Font size also matters for legal documents. Courts only require that the font is legible. Most courts and lawyers recommend using a 12-point font for legal documents. Thats large enough for anyone to be able to read and still small enough that you can fit plenty of information on a single page.
Recommended serif fonts include Cambria, Georgia, and Times New Roman. Sans serif fonts dont have small strokes attached to their letters, giving them a cleaner and more modern style. Some recommended sans serif fonts include Arial, Calibri, and Verdana.
While theres no one official font style for preparing legal documents, there are a few court-approved fonts that are considered most easily readable: Arial. Century (and Century-related fonts like Century Schoolbook) Verdana.
As a standard font for legal documents, Times New Roman (along with Arial and Helvetica) is one of the most commonly used fonts.
Why are legal documents always in the same font? They arent, but most courts prefer a choice of two or three fonts, like Times New Roman, Courier New, Arial, because they are not distracting and easier to read.
One of the specifications deals with the question of which font is used on a government document. Many clerks use the classic Times New Roman, which has been the standard for documents of all kinds for many years. The good news is that there are no legal requirements for the choice of fonts for official documents.
