If you know the recipient on a first-name basis, use their first name after the salutation. This works well if you email your manager or co-worker. For example, you can address them as Dear Taylor or Hello Bob.
Salutation: The salutation of a formal email is similar to the salutation of a letter. When writing to someone you do not know by name, you put To Whom it May Concern. When applying for a job, you would address the person by, Dear Hiring Manager. If you do know the recipients name, you put Dear Mr./Ms.
It solely depends on if this is a business email or a personal email. Personal email: You can use first name if youre acquainted with the person and/or have a relationship. In a business email, you should always address the recipient as Mr./Mrs./Ms/Dr etc etc.
Personally, I use my first initial and my full middle and full last name, as in E. Gary Gygax. Another option is to use your full first and full last name with your middle initial. Then, add your preferred name just before your last name in quotation marks.
Technically, its not appropriate to use a persons first name, without permission. The right thing to do is use an honorific (Mr., Ms., Mrs., Dr. ) until the person says, Please call me (first name).
Rule 8: Full Name Is Not Always Necessary Some people have a lot of names, and most of the time it depends where they are from. You do not need to use your full name all the time, only the one or two most common names that you use - andrea.lopez@company.com.
