OEM original equipment manufacturer Apples iPhone has the Apple logo clearly visible to users. Apple is the OEM. Apple designs its products, but Apple outsources the majority of iPhone manufacturing production to contract electronics solutions providers.
ODM, on the other hand, is an abbreviation for Original Design Manufacturer. As the name suggests, ODM is a business model that produces the design and the final product. Therefore, they operate as both the designers and manufacturers, but allow the buyer/customer to make slight changes to the products.
An OEM factory does not have designs for sell. ODM factories have catalogs of designs for you to choose from. A brand like Mango does not need designs. They have their own designers in-house.
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) is also referred to as private labeling or white label products. In this case, the manufacturer has an existing product design and the customer may make slight changes to sell it under their own brand name. Some examples of changes include branding, colors, or packaging.
OEM and ODM are acronyms seen quite frequently in the manufacturing world. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer and ODM stands for Original Design Manufacturer. Though many people often confuse the two terms and use them interchangeably, they certainly do not mean the same thing.
The main difference between OEM, ODM, and OBM is the level of involvement in the manufacturing process. OEMs design and manufacture products that are sold under another companys brand name, while ODMs manufacture products based on the designs and specifications provided by another company.
OEM gives the business more control over the manufacturing process. However, this comes with additional responsibilities. In contrast, ODM relieves businesses of any manufacturing responsibilities but also eliminates control. ODM and OEM each offer unique forms of flexibility.
OEM meaning original equipment manufacturer applies to any company that manufactures parts or products that are intended to be incorporated into end products of other companies. Occasionally, an OEM will produce the entire product, which is sold under the other companys name.
