Use this basic pattern as a guide to incorporate evidence into your paragraph: 1) State your claim, and define any terms that may not be known to your reader. 2) Provide evidence that supports your claim. 3) Comment on how the evidence supports your claim.
In order to use evidence effectively, you need to integrate it smoothly into your essay by following this pattern: State your claim. Give your evidence, remembering to relate it to the claim. Comment on the evidence to show how it supports the claim.
Essentially you have two options when referring to evidence - you can quote directly, or you can paraphrase (put the ideas into your own words). Note that in both cases you need to cite the evidence even if you put it into your own words, you are still using someone elses ideas.
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote.
There are three main ways to integrate evidence from sources into your writing: quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Each form requires a citation because you are using another persons words and/or ideas.
These words and phrases are directly copied from the original text. You can copy selected words and phrases from an authors work if you put quotation marks around them. These embedded quotations are called evidence because they illustrate or prove a statement you make about the authors writing.
Generally speaking, there are three ways to integrate sources into a research paper summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting.
