There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote.
These words and phrases are directly copied from the original text. You can copy selected words and phrases from an authors work if you put quotation marks around them. These embedded quotations are called evidence because they illustrate or prove a statement you make about the authors writing.
Essentially you have two options when referring to evidence - you can quote directly, or you can paraphrase (put the ideas into your own words). Note that in both cases you need to cite the evidence even if you put it into your own words, you are still using someone elses ideas.
There are three main ways to integrate evidence from sources into your writing: quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing. Each form requires a citation because you are using another persons words and/or ideas.
Use a claim or argument to introduce the evidence. Another option is to use your own claim or argument to introduce the evidence in a clear, assertive way. Keep the claim or argument short and relevant. Back it up with your sources. Use a colon after the claim or argument.
Establish your ethos as a good, reliable scholar/researcher. Let readers know where to find information on your topic. Generally speaking, there are three ways to integrate sources into a research paper summarizing, paraphrasing and quoting.
Often, your evidence will be included as text in the body of your paper, as a quotation, paraphrase, or summary. Sometimes you might include graphs, charts, or tables; excerpts from an interview; or photographs or illustrations with accompanying captions.
