Essentially you have two options when referring to evidence - you can quote directly, or you can paraphrase (put the ideas into your own words). Note that in both cases you need to cite the evidence even if you put it into your own words, you are still using someone elses ideas.
You can present your evidence in two different ways: direct quote or paraphrase. A direct quote comes from the text, word-for-word. You want to embed these quotes, so work them into a sentence instead of simply dropping them into your essay. You also dont want these quotes to be too long.
You can copy selected words and phrases from an authors work if you put quotation marks around them. These embedded quotations are called evidence because they illustrate or prove a statement you make about the authors writing.
