Images inserted from a file are embedded by default; you have to choose to link them. Images pasted from the Internet will usually be pasted as links; you can select such a picture (when it is displayed as a picture) and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to unlink it and embed it in the document.
Add a drawing to a document Click in your document where you want to create the drawing. On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes. When you find the shape you want to insert, double-click to insert it automatically, or click and drag to draw it in your document.
When you click a picture, the Drawing Tools tab, rather than the Picture Tools tab, appears above the Format tab. Note: If you do not see either the Picture Tools or Drawing Tools tabs, make sure that you selected a picture, shape, or other object.
In the gallery, right-click the shape you want to add and choose Lock Drawing Mode (Figure D). Click inside the document and drag to size or position the shape if necessary. Repeat step 2 as many times as required. Press Esc to exit Lock Drawing Mode.
