With JPEG files, the white balance is already balanced. This is a big reason why JPEGs look more finished than their RAW counterparts straight off the camera. A change you can make in a one-step increment in Lightroom, like white balance, you can only make in a five-step increment with JPEGs, Morrison points out.
In Praise of Raw Now your camera is set to take raw images, you have a greater ability to adjust the look of the image than if you have it set to take JPEGs. Raw files save all the data collected by the sensor and allow for non-destructive development of the photo. This is unlike shooting to produce JPEG files.
When shooting in RAW, you have more control over these aspects of your photograph because there is much more data available to control. While a jpeg file is compressed and typically just between 1-3 MB in size, a RAW file is much larger, usually between 2 to 6 times larger than a jpeg file.
Its not the RAW images that look good, but the default processing applied to the raw images that produce a nice-looking JPG/JPEG. All raw files require subsequent editing so, unless you want to edit your digital images, there is little point in shooting raw files.
As you might expect, the tradeoff for these detailed files is that RAW files are quite a bit larger than JPEG files. Still, most professional photographers shoot in RAW because it gives them more information to work with in the post-processing phase.
Lets avoid all the geek-speak and keep it simple; RAW files are the highest quality type of digital image a digital camera can capture. So, to my mind, any pro photographer worth their salt will ALWAYS shoot in RAW format. I always shoot in RAW format for this reason.
Embed the entire non-DNG raw file inside the DNG file. This creates a larger DNG file, but it allows the original raw file to be extracted later in needed.
Some common disadvantages of RAW files include: Large size. Their size can require both additional camera and computer storage space. Format compatibility issues. RAW files arent standardized, so some software cant read the files from certain cameras. Processing requirements. Sharing restrictions. Longer workflows.
