Independent contractors fill out a Form W-9. Employees fill out Form W-4. Self-employed workers use the Form W-9 to provide their taxpayer identification number (TIN) to companies that they do work for. Employees use the Form W-4 to inform their employers of how much income tax to withhold from their paycheck.
Internal Revenue Code sections 3402(f)(2) and 6109 and their regulations require you to provide this information; your employer uses it to determine your federal income tax withholding.
Keep in mind that checking box 2(c) tells your employer that you have multiple jobs. If you dont want to disclose that fact, dont check the box. In this step, the form notes that individuals with multiple jobs should complete Form W-4 with the information from their highest-paying job.
Form W-4 tells you the employees filing status, multiple jobs adjustments, amount of credits, amount of other income, amount of deductions, and any additional amount to withhold from each paycheck to use to compute the amount of federal income tax to deduct and withhold from the employees pay.
