Typical houses are built using 2x6s for exterior walls and 2x4s for interior. Studs are positioned perpendicular to the wall theyre forming to give strength and create space for wires, pipes and insulation.
Wood-framed houses have traditionally been built with 2x4 studs spaced 16-inches on-center. Research has shown exterior framed walls can be adequately supported by 2x6 studs spaced 24-inches on-center.
What is a wall stud? Studs are vertical 2 by 4 inch beams that support the frame of your home. You can find them behind your drywall, usually spaced 16 or 24 inches apart. Since studs are made of thick and sturdy wood or metal, they can securely hold screws better than wall materials like drywall.
The primary purpose of blocking is to brace longer frame members such as wall studs against Eulers bending moment, which is a tendency to buckle under vertical compression. The intervals for the blocks are specified in the building code or as calculated by a structural engineer.
For residential construction, the building code requirement typically is for a rated sheathing panel of either OSB or plywood of 0.95 cm (3/8 in) thickness when sheathing is required, as for shear wall sections; however, the common practice is to use sheathing thicknesses greater than code, which is referred to as
Sometimes blocking is added between the studs. Blocking provides a solid spot in the wall for attaching things such as cabinets or handrails. In some situations, blocking is required as a fire-stop where a stud bay extends between floors. This keeps the bay from acting as a chimney for a fire.
Five common structural exterior sheathing options include wood-based, gypsum, glass mat, cement board, and Barricade Thermo-Brace. Plywood sheathing is made from whole sheets of wood that are cross-laminated, which give the boards strength and stiffness.
Foundation cripple walls shall be framed of studs that are not less than the size of the studding above and not less than 14 inches (356 mm) in length, or shall be framed of solid blocking.
Wood frame exterior walls must be fully sheathed, including areas above or below wall openings, with minimum 7/16-in. wood structural panels. Interior shear walls must be fully sheathed including areas above or below wall openings with minimum 7/16-in.
