XPS stands for XML Paper Specification. Thats because it contains page layout information written in the XML page description language. Essentially, this type of language describes the structure and content of a document, including its layout and appearance, making it suited for printing for example.
The XPS format is similar to PDF because both file types are designed to show the final appearance of a document and provide information for printing. However, XPS files are written in a different programming language.
Microsoft XPS Document Writer (MXDW) is an application that allows you to create XPS files. First introduced in the Microsoft XP Service Pack, it has been included in each subsequent version of the Microsoft operating system, including Windows 11. Its fairly straightforward to use.

XPS files or XML Paper Specification files are Microsofts direct competitor to docHubs PDF format. XPS Viewer is a tool used to view XPS files, similar to docHub Reader. While XPS might not be as popular as PDF, some Windows users still work with it.
The XPS format offers an easy way to create, share, print and save digital documents. XPS files are simple to create, so long as you have the right software. You can also easily convert XPS files to other formats such as PDF, which may be useful if youre wanting to edit the document in docHub.
This is a key difference between XPS and PDF, as PDF files are generally more widely accessible across different devices and operating systems. XPS is primarily utilized for printing and publishing functions on Windows-based devices.
