The most frequently used example involves embedding a relative clause inside another one as in: A man that a woman loves. A man that a woman that a child knows loves. A man that a woman that a child that a bird saw knows loves.
Embedding refers to the process of inserting one sentence into another sentence. It includes putting questions into affirmative sentences, with a subsequent change in word order (embedded questions). I wonder if you could tell me what time it is? is the question What time is it?
An embedded clause is another way of using a subordinate clause, but in the middle of a sentence. It becomes embedded in the sentence. Usually, this clause will be separated by two commas, one before and one after. Josh, who was feeling tired, walked home slowly.
A relative clause is embedded when it interrupts the main clause: The house, which had cracked windows, looked scary. The main clause above is shown in blue and makes sense on its own if the relative clause is removed.
An embedded clause is a grammatical term used in English when your child is in Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11). It means a clause that is used in the middle of a sentence to add more information. It is a type of subordinate clause - this just means that it doesnt make sense without the rest of the sentence.
Embedded clauses are placed within the main clause in a sentence. They do not make sense as stand-alone sentences, unlike main clauses. For example: The giraffe, who was the tallest in the zoo, towered over the other animals.
For example, in the sentence The thief that the kid saw was on foot, the clause that the kid saw is nested within the larger clause The thief was on foot. Theres not much issue in understanding this sentence. The problem starts when multiple clauses are embedded within one another.
