A doctor of osteopathy (DO) is qualified to perform OMT. These specialists have studied osteopathic techniques and undergone special training in the bodys musculoskeletal system and the interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones. A DO is also sometimes known as an osteopathic physician.
Answer From Brent A. Bauer, M.D. A doctor of osteopathic medicine, also known as a D.O., is a fully trained and licensed doctor. A doctor of osteopathic medicine graduates from a U.S. osteopathic medical school. A doctor of medicine, also known as an M.D., graduates from a traditional medical school.
Physicians who hold an active AOA primary board certification are now eligible to earn a Designation of OMT, signifying their skills and expertise in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and osteopathic principles and practice (OPP).
Yes. A DO has the same privileges, rights, as well as responsibilities to practice medicine as an MD. A DO must complete the four-year medical schooling with a residency, like an MD. The differentiation is that a DO undergoes training of manual manipulation of the musculoskeletal system.
Is a DO a higher degree than an MD? No, both DO and MD degrees are equivalent accreditations and provide the same level of authority and responsibility to practice medicine. The main difference between the two is the philosophy and approach to medicine they bring to their practice.
MDs tend to focus on diagnosing and treating one part of the body. DOs tend to think about how different parts of the body work together. For example, they might think about how skeletal conditions could affect your muscles.
MDs and DOs are equally trained and follow the most recent guidelines for disease prevention and treatment. Neither is better, but you may have a preference based on your view of medicine.
Both DOs and MDs are good doctors with professional training. A lot of their training is very similar, and both types of doctor use technology like X-rays and prescriptions. If you went to an MD and a DO, you probably wouldnt notice a lot of differences.
