A bill of lading needs to have three signatures on it: the shippers, the carriers, and the receivers. The shippers signature says that the quantity and quality of the loaded goods meet the industry standard. The carriers signature verifies that when he received the load the cargo was in good condition.
Each bill of lading is actually two documents, each containing the same information. Both copies must be signed by the shipper and then also by the receiver when the shipment is delivered. (In addition, the driver signs on the carriers behalf.)
Over the past few years there have been advancements in technology that have transformed the traditional paper based Bill of Lading into an Electronic Bill Of Lading (eB/L) format. This new technology is also referred to as E Bill of Lading, Electronic Bill or Digital Bill of Lading.
The Master should typically sign the bill of lading in the designated signature line, or if one is not provided, at the bottom of the face of the bill of lading.
(1) Your name and address, or the name and address of the motor carrier issuing the bill of lading. (2) The names and addresses of any other motor carriers, when known, who will participate in transportation of the shipment.
An electronic bill of lading (eBOL or eB/L) is the legal and functional equivalent of a paper bill of lading. Electronic data interchange (EDI) has become widely accepted throughout the greater business community.
Endorsement Rules as per ISBP 745 When a multimodal transport document is issued to order or to order of the shipper, it is to be endorsed by the shipper. An endorsement may be made by a named entity other than the shipper, provided the endorsement is made for [or on behalf of] the shipper.
Advantages of E-Bills Speed: The speed of transfer of an E-Bill means that a bill of lading can pass through multiple hands and still be at the discharge port when the vessel arrives, removing the need for (and cost of) letters of indemnity.
What To Include In a Bill of Lading The number of units to be shipped. The precise weight of the shipment (multiple freight units call for each items weight to be listed). Shipper and receiver names and addresses. The date of shipment. The carriers unique instructions.
A bill of lading has three main purposes. First, it is a document of title to the goods described in the bill of lading. Second, it is a receipt for the shipped products. Finally, it represents the agreed terms and conditions for the transportation of the goods.
