There is nothing in the law which states that a written reference must be accompanied by a handwritten signature. In fact references can be given verbally, although this is not advisable as there can be disputes about what exactly has been said.
No, it is not compulsory to put signature when writing a letter, an article or a notice. However, whenever we create any formal document, we do put our signature to assure that we have written the same.
If you dont sign the letter of recommender (LoR) form sent by the graduate school then your application would not proceed further. University will send you reminder for signing the lor and send it to it.
Letters of recommendation must be signed, dated, and on official letterhead. Unless explicitly asked by the student, do not recommend a student for a specific school or program (e.g., applicant to Penn Medical School).
Students generally dont submit their own letters of recommendation. Teachers, counselors and other recommenders usually send them in electronically via whichever application platform a student is using, such as the Common App.
The recommendation letters for the Common App can all be submitted electronically. There is no need for them to be printed and uploaded with an actual signature.
To upload in the application, they can be scanned with a digital signature. However, you will eventually have to submit printed, signed in ink, letters. So, if possible, try to obtain them the original copies with ink signatures so you wouldnt have to ask again.
End the letter with your handwritten signature, followed by your typed name. If this is an email, simply include your typed name, followed by your contact information.
