Many companies have policies that state they cannot disclose the reason past employees left the company. Instead, most prospective employers will provide start and end dates of employment and job titles.
To check your credentials, a prospective employer calls your previous employers directly to verify the accuracy of jobs and dates of employment in your application. A prospective employer may also ask them about your skills and how well you performed tasks.
Employers contract with The Work Number to handle employment verifications, using data from their payroll files that are sent weekly to The Work Number. The information allows The Work Number to provide: Name. Most recent hire date.
What should be included in employment verification letters? Employer address. Name and address of the company requesting verification. Employee name. Employment dates. Employee job title. Employee job description. Employee current salary. Reason for termination (If applicable)
Some hiring managers do it themselves, docHubing out directly (typically via phone) to your current or previous employers to request official verification. Alternatively, employers may use professional background screening firms and/or an employment verification service such as The Work Number from Equifax.
Failing to do so can result in penalties or fines that can harm your business. However, if a request for employment verification comes from another party, such as an employer, landlord or mortgage lender, there arent laws and regulations that require employers to respond to an employment verification request.
Damage to the employers reputation Customers may lose trust in a company that hires people without the proper training or experience. If an employer discovers you lied on your resume, the employer may fire you and end all association with you.
An employment verification letter (EVL), also referred to as a proof of employment letter, is a document that an employer uses to write and confirm the employment status of their current or former employees. A verification letter usually includes information such as: Employment start or end dates. Salary information.
