The DMV can easily handle one letter or number in the wrong place for free. Nearly every state has an affidavit for correction form. These simple forms list the most common errors, from misspelling your name to assigning the title to the wrong person.
If information is incorrect on your title, or you need to change information, you will need to notify the RMV and request an amended certificate of title. You will receive your amended certificate of title in the mail within 10 14 business days.
If this occurs, a duplicate title must be obtained by the current owner and the incorrect title should be enclosed with your request. Any corrections due to the misspelling of information may be corrected by drawing a line through the incorrect information and inserting the correct information.
To transfer a title, you will always need: Either the California Certificate of Title or an Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227) (if the title is missing). The signature(s) of seller(s) and lienholder (if any). The signature(s) of buyer(s). A transfer fee.
If youre selling your vehicle and made a written error, the best solution is to go to your DMV and explain what happened. The DMV can issue a duplicate title so youre able to start over.
Wrong Mileage and Incorrect VIN Some states will allow the buyer and seller to sign an odometer discrepancy affidavit to remove an incorrect mileage reading or a VIN verification form for an incorrect VIN. Your vehicle may need to be inspected by law enforcement to verify the corrected information.
A Statement of Error or Erasure (REG 101) form is required for any erasure and/or lined out information on the California Certificate of Title. For example, if an individuals signature appears on the title in error and is lined out, a REG 101 must be completed by that individual explaining the error.
ACCEPTABLE CORRECTIONS Drawing a single line through the incorrect purchaser or seller information and note, completed/signed in error along with the notarys initials listed near the changes made on the title and attach a docHubd affidavit explaining the error to the title application.
