Book formatting is the way your book looks. Its the layout of your bookthink chapters, page numbers, paragraph spacing, things like that. This includes aesthetic choices like which fonts you use for chapter headings and page numbers, and it also includes more technical choices like line spacing and font size.
The things a publisher will look for in an edited volume proposal are these the 4 Cs: coherence (how well does it all fit together as a book?) contribution (what is this book going to do, as a collection, and why does that matter?) coverage (is it as broad or as focused as it needs to be do that job well?)
The chapter title should be centered halfway or one-third of the way down the page. For the first chapter, write Chapter One (or Chapter 1) and write the chapter title below. Continue this chapter headings format for each subsequent chapter number. New chapters should start on a blank page.
Title page Always falls on a right-facing page directly after the half title page. Doesnt contain page numbers or page headers. Typically contains the book title, subtitle, and author name. Doesnt include by before author name, even if contained in manuscript.
The student title page includes the paper title, author names (the byline), author affiliation, course number and name for which the paper is being submitted, instructor name, assignment due date, and page number, as shown in this example.
Italicize titles if the source is self-contained and independent. Titles of books, plays, films, periodicals, databases, and websites are italicized. Place titles in quotation marks if the source is part of a larger work. Articles, essays, chapters, poems, webpages, songs, and speeches are placed in quotation marks.
A book proposal is basically a 20-70 page business plan for your book that needs to convince publishers the world needs this book (right now) and that youre the perfect person to write it. If theyre sold, theyll offer you an advance and a book contract before you actually finish the book.
Include a title page with the name of the book, your name, and your address, phone, and email. For the table of contents, if possible, link your page numbers so theyll jump to the corresponding section of the proposal.
