Themes are at the heart of any qualitative research approach. Themes cannot be observed as they are perceptions, experiences, feelings, values and emotions residing in the minds of participants/respondents of a research.
Themes are features of participants accounts characterising particular perceptions and/or experiences that the researcher sees as relevant to the research question.
Go to the Design Survey section in any survey. In the left sidebar, click Style. Click the Themes tab. In the Standard Theme section, find a theme closest to what you want your final theme to look like.
Go to the Analyze Results section of your survey. Click the Individual Responses tab. Use the left and right arrows to find the response you want to edit. Click the Edit button in the upper-right corner of the grey box containing the respondents metadata.
The thematic surveys are carried out through random sampling. The statistics from these surveys can be used to add considerable depth to the information from the structural survey. The first results are available one year after the collection of data from the respondents has been concluded.
Themes are identified by physically sorting the examples into piles of similar meaning. Word-based techniques are useful. Nothing however beats a careful scrutiny of the texts for finding themes that may be more subtle or that are not directly obvious in the text.
