The retention tag is created by using retention settings from the managed folder and its managed content settings. You can use this parameter to create retention tags based on existing managed folders to migrate users from managed folder mailbox policies to retention policies.
In the details panes for that mailbox, select Mailbox, and then for the Retention policy section, select Manage mailbox policies. In the Mailbox policies pane, use the dropdown list box for Retention policy to select the policy you want to apply to the mailbox, and then select Save.
Retention tags allow users to tag their own mailbox folders and individual items for retention. Users no longer have to file items in managed folders provisioned by an administrator based on message retention requirements.
On the Configure your policy page, enter a name for the retention policy, and then select + Add tag to select the tags you want to add to this retention policy. You can create a retention policy without adding any retention tags to it, but items in the mailbox to which the policy is applied won't be moved or deleted.
First, log on to Office 365 with your global administrator account. Then, from the app launcher, choose the Exchange Admin Center. From there, browse to Compliance Management > Retention Tags. From here, you'll create the different default policy tags that apply to your mailboxes.
Go to Recipients > Mailboxes. In User Mailbox, click Mailbox features. In the Retention policy list, select the policy you want to apply to the mailbox, and then click Save.
In the folder pane, right-click the message or folder for which you want to apply a policy and select Assign policy. Select the archive or retention policy you want to assign to the message or folder. Tip: If you want a message to adhere to the same policy as the folder it's in, select Use parent folder policy.
