There are two main ways to edit a Symbol. You can edit the contents in the Symbol Source, or you can edit individual instances with overrides.
A graphical symbol is a visually perceptible figure with a particular meaning used to transmit information independently of language (definition from ISO 17724:2003). The meaning assigned to each graphical symbol is expressed by its title, which may be supplemented by an application note.
To create a new symbol: Insert > New Symbol (or Ctrl-F8) brings up a requestor that wants to know the type of symbol being created (movie clip, button or graphic) and a name for it. It then takes you to symbol edit mode where you create and edit the symbol.
A caret shows where an additional or corrected or substituted letter, word, or phrase is to be inserted in or above the line. A horizontal line delete mark is made through a phrase, sentence, or paragraph. A vertical line delete mark is made through a single letter or mark of punctuation.
Graphic symbol is a collection of frames used in animations or single frame mode. An animated graphic symbol is tied to the Timeline of the document in which the symbol is placed. In contrast, a movie clip symbol has its own independent Timeline.
Proofreading symbols are the marks that a proofreader makes on a paper when they edit it. They are a coded set of instructions that point out where mistakes have been made and how a piece of writing can be improved.
Edit a symbol in symbol-editing mode Select an instance of the symbol on the Stage and select Edit > Edit Symbols.
