The files in the folder are dotX template files, different from regular docx files. All Word documents are based on a template, with preset styles like Calibri font, 11-point size, and 1-inch margins. Template files send this information to the Word document every time it is opened. The same principle applies when working with template files.

You can customize an existing template to make it even more useful. Add static information to the existing template, and then save the file again (as a template). On the File menu, click New from Template. Click a template that is similar to the one you want to create, and then click Create.
To apply a style: Select the text you want to format, or place your cursor at the beginning of the line. In the Styles group on the Home tab, click the More drop-down arrow. Select the desired style from the drop-down menu. The text will appear in the selected style.
To edit a DOTX file, directly launch the word processor you use, click “File” in the toolbar, select “Open” to choose the template file and open it, make your changes, and then tap “Save”. You will successfully modify the DOTX file.
Launch Microsoft Word and open the template to edit by clicking the “Open” option on the File tab. To find templates more quickly, click the “All Files” drop-down menu and select “All Word Templates,” then double-click the template to edit.
To update your template, open the file, make the changes you want, and then save the template. Click File > Open. Double-click This PC. ... Browse to the Custom Office Templates folder that's under My Documents. Click your template, and click Open. Make the changes you want, then save and close the template.
Open the Normal template (Normal. dotm). Make any changes that you want to the fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings. You can use the same commands and features that you use to change a document — but remember that any changes that you make to Normal.
Try it! To change orientation, select Layout > Orientation. Select Portrait or Landscape.
You can open DOTX files with Microsoft Word in Windows and macOS. Word is the best choice for opening DOTX files because it fully supports the formatting of Word templates, which includes text spacing, tables, and images. The software is also available for Android and iOS devices.
