Sign into My Account to make a change online. Select Change my return and make your request. If you filed your taxes online, you can use ReFILE to change your return. Use ReFILE with the same tax software you used to do your taxes that year.
Generally, CRA can only audit someone up to four years after a tax return has been filed, although, in some cases, such as cases of suspected fraud or misrepresentation, CRA can go farther back and there is no time-limit for the re-assessment.
This is the length of time youre legally required to hold onto old tax returns and supporting documents. The six-year period starts at the end of the tax year to which the records relate. For example, a 2021 return and its supporting documents are safe to destroy at the end of 2027.
Keeping business documents such as tax records, pay stubs, and other supporting documents is important. Business owners should hold on to most documents for a period of 6-7 years in compliance with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) standards.
There are three ways to correct your return once youve received your notice of assessment: use the change my return option found in My Account at .cra.gc.ca/myaccount, one of the CRAs secure online services; send a completed Form T1-ADJ, T1 Adjustment Request, to your tax centre; or.
Generally, you can request a change only to a tax return from any of the 10 previous calendar years. For example, if you make a request in 2023, it must relate to the 2013 or later tax returns.
How long to keep your records. Generally, you must keep all required records and supporting documents for a period of six years from the end of the last tax year they relate to. The tax year: is the fiscal period for corporations.
Alberta Treasury Board Finance: In general, all records and books, including all supporting documentation, must be kept for at least six years from the end of the taxation year to which they relate.
