Raw files produce high quality results. You can recover the highlight and shadow detail in a raw file to a far greater level compared with a JPEG, giving improved dynamic range. You can extensively edit raw files to boost the tone, sharpen the image, and make many other basic image adjustments.
Most consumer photo labs will not print raw files. Professional labs also do not print from raw files. The acceptable file format for print is high resolution JPEG or in some cases TIFF – both of which you can easily export copies of from your raw files.
It is usually better to convert raw files and edit them in an application like Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements before making prints....Why Shoot Raw Files? Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
Because raw files are essentially impossible to open and alter, any changes we make are saved as extra data alongside the file. This not only means we can change any edit at any time, but also makes it easy to copy edits between photos.
Raw files allow you to extract much more image data to work with. When you shoot JPEGs, you are stuck with a bit depth of 8 – which is equivalent to 256 brightness levels. Shooting raw files gives you the option of converting them into 16-bit images which means the file has 65,536 levels of brightness.

When it comes to editing raw photos one of the most important things to grasp is that the changes you make to a raw in an editor like Lightroom or Camera Raw will never alter the original file. Instead, they only change the way the photo looks in the preview.
The RAW format is ideal if you are shooting with the intent of editing the images later. Shots where you are trying to capture a lot of detail or color, and images where you want to tweak light and shadow, should be shot in RAW.
