In this YouTube tutorial, the speaker demonstrates how to open a comma separated values (CSV) file in Excel without losing any information. They start by explaining that they have a CSV file saved in Excel with large ID numbers saved as text fields. When they reopen the Excel file, everything appears fine, but if they open the CSV version, the ID numbers are displayed in scientific notation, which is not suitable for their purpose. To resolve this, the speaker suggests creating a new blank workbook in Excel and saving it as a text file. They then import the CSV file (named "file with big numbers.csv") and select the "import" option.

To preserve all the digits in text-formatted numbers, you have to import the downloaded CSV file as raw data into a new Excel spreadsheet, set the column datatypes as needed, and then save the new file as an Excel workbook. Excel (XLSX) files will preserve these formats, CSV files wont.
The way to go is adding a leading single quote ( ) as written down in the documentation: If you decide to enter a number directly as text, enter an apostrophe ( ) first. For example, for years in column headings, you can enter 1999, 2000 and 2001.
Click the Data tab, and select From Text. Find your CSV file stored on your computer, and click Open. In the Text Import Wizard window, be sure Delimited is selected as your file type. In the File origin drop down, select 65001 : Unicode (UTF-8). Check the My Data has headers box. Click the Next button.
Use Paste Special and Multiply Select the cells that have numbers stored as text. On the Home tab, select Paste Paste Special. Select Multiply, and then click OK. Excel multiplies each cell by 1, and in doing so, converts the text to numbers.
On Windows PC the Control Panel Region, Formats tab, then Additional Settings leading to Customize Format and the Numbers tab. Within newer versions of Excel, you should be able to change the separator in the Options section, Advanced/Editing Options/Use system separators.
Select a column, then choose the type of data you want to import it as. For numbers you want treated as text - zip codes, phone numbers, lat/long, ID numbers - anything you dont want to do calculations on - choose TEXT. You can also choose date or other formats for the appropriate columns.
Numbers allows you to easily view and edit CSV files as spreadsheets with info placed into columns, thats often more convenient compared to working in a text editor.
