What is a motif? A motif is a repeated patternan image, sound, word, or symbol that comes back again and again within a particular story.

An example of a motif is bright light in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, which is used to express the love that Romeo and Juliet have for each other as well as the potential danger of that love.
In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare there is a motif of light and dark. Romeo constantly refers to Juliet as a source of light, and Juliet says that Romeo lights her. The lovers are described as stars that light the darkness of the sky. Their love is described as a flash of lightning.
Examples of Motif in Narrative Writing A repeated reference or visual of shattered glass (something in life is about to break) Recurring dishonest characters (to cue up the discovery of an unfaithful spouse) A character who constantly misplaces things (as the loss of someone or something docHub is on the horizon)
