The default editor that comes with the UNIX operating system is called vi (visual editor). Using vi editor, we can edit an existing file or create a new file from scratch. we can also use this editor to just read a text file. Syntax: vi filename.
You can go to a particular line or word in a file using vi in several ways: To make vi start at a particular line in a file, add +linenum to the command you use to start vi. If youre already in vi, you can use the goto command. You can also use the ex command line to go to a line. (
Highlight several lines with your mouse and press Shift + Alt + I on Linux and Windows, or Shift + Option + I on macOS, to insert multi-cursors at the end of every selected line: Add multi-cursors to the end of selected lines.
Using the head and tail Commands Lets say we want to read line X. The idea is: First, we get line 1 to X using the head command: head -n X input. Then, we pipe the result from the first step to the tail command to get the last line: head -n X input | tail -1.
Vi: Open the file using the vi or vim command: vi examplefile. Press the i key to enter insert mode. Make your desired changes. Press the escape ESC key to exit insert mode. Type :w and press the enter key to save your changes. Type :q and press the enter key to close the file.
How To Jump to the End of the File Jump to the Last Line. Use the G key to jump to the last line. Use the End Key. The G key moves the cursor to the final line but not to the end of that line. Append/Insert Text at the End. Run the $ Command. Use the Closed Brackets.
To enter vi, type: vi filename To enter insert mode, type: i. Type in the text: This is easy. To leave insert mode and return to command mode, press: In command mode, save changes and exit vi by typing: :wq You are back at the Unix prompt.
Vi shortcuts $ vi Open or edit a file. i Switch to Insert mode. Esc Switch to Command mode. :w Save and continue editing. :wq or ZZ Save and quit/exit vi. :q! Quit vi and do not save changes. yy Yank (copy) a line of text. p Paste a line of yanked text below the current line.
Creating and Editing Files with the vi Editor Using SSH Press i on your keybord to switch to input mode. Insert the required content or make the required changes. Press the ESC key on your keyboard to exit the input mode. Save the new file or changes with the following command: :wq. bash.
The edit command prompt is a colon (:), which is shown after starting the editor. If you are editing an existing file, then you have some lines in edits buffer (its name for the copy of the file you are editing). When you start editing, edit makes the last line of the file the current line.
