If there is a mistake, call the client immediately and request a corrected Form 1099. The client may not have filed the 1099 with the IRS yet, because they are not due until February 28th (March 31st if filed electronically). If the 1099 has been filed with the IRS, ask the client to send the IRS a corrected 1099.
Note: If you originally efile your 1099's and need to make a dollar amount correction, you can file your correction on the efile site for the same tax year. Any prior years will need to be filed by paper. If you paper filed your original you will need to file the correction by paper.
If you receive the missing or corrected Form W-2 or Form 1099-R after you file your return and the information differs from your estimates, you must file Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. For additional information on filing an amended return, see Topic No.
You can void 1099-DIV in the same way as 1099-misc. File the form with rectified information. Check "Void" and send the form to the recipient and the IRS website. If you are filing a form in paper forms, do it with form 1096.
To correct Type 1 errors, file the correct form with the correct amount, code, checkbox, name or address and check the “CORRECTED” box (generally located at the top of the form). Submit the corrected 1099 form to the recipient and prepare the red Copy A to send to the IRS with the Form 1096 transmittal if paper filing.
If there is a mistake, call the client immediately and request a corrected Form 1099. You must use a regular copy of Form 1099 (either NEC or MISC) and mark the box next to “CORRECTED” at the top. Send corrected Forms 1099 to the IRS, contractor or vendor, and state agencies (if applicable). And, be ready to file a corrected Form 1096 to accompany the return you're correcting.
IRS imposes substantial penalties for 1099, including penalties for late filing, failure to file, failure to file correct 1099, failure to file 1099 electronically, and failure to provide recipient copies.
E-File Direct can be used to file an unlimited number of corrected 1099 forms where dollar amounts have been corrected. You will need to register with the IRS and obtain a Transmitter Control Code (TCC) by filing out form 4419 and upload the file to the IRS through the FIRE system.
