There are 2 types of XML indexes primary and secondary. A primary XML index essentially contains one row of information for each node in the XML column. This information is made up of XML node values, types, and paths.
3. What is index type for XML index entries? Explanation: XML index entries appear in the catalog view, sys. indexes, with the index type 3.
To modify an index Right-click the index that you want to modify and then click Properties. In the Index Properties dialog box, make the desired changes. For example, you can add or remove a column from the index key, or change the setting of an index option.
To create a primary XML index, the table in which the XML column occurs must have a clustered index on the primary key of the table. SQL Server uses this primary key to correlate rows in the primary XML index with rows in the table that contains the XML column.
Summary: Indexing is a small table which is consist of two columns. Two main types of indexing methods are 1)Primary Indexing 2) Secondary Indexing. Primary Index is an ordered file which is fixed length size with two fields. The primary Indexing is also further divided into two types 1)Dense Index 2)Sparse Index.
The primary XML index is a shredded and persisted representation of the XML BLOBs in the xml data type column. For each XML binary large object (BLOB) in the column, the index creates several rows of data. The number of rows in the index is approximately equal to the number of nodes in the XML binary large object.
In contrast to traditional relational indexes, where index keys are composed of one or more table columns you specify, an index over XML data uses a particular XML pattern expression to index paths and values in XML documents stored within a single column.
