If you apply a highlight color to selected text and no color appears, the problem is likely to be one of the following: You have selected No Color instead of a color. The selection if of a type that can't be highlighted. The Show highlighter marks setting is turned OFF.
To change the highlight color or switch to underline, tap the text, tap Highlight, then tap an option.
In the Books app on your Mac, click Books (or another collection) in the sidebar, then double-click a book. Select and Control-click the text you want to highlight or annotate. In the pop-up menu, choose a color, the underline, or Add Note. To change the highlight color or remove a highlight or note, click the text.
To do that, go to Tools , Options and click on the Edit tab. A single word , double-click on it. An entire paragraph , triple-click anywhere inside the paragraph or double-click on the left margin. A sentence , hold down Ctrl and click on the sentence.

You can highlight text in your document by clicking on the Highlight tool, located in the Font group on the Home tab of the ribbon. (In some versions of Word this tool is called the Text Highlight Color tool.) When you click the tool, the mouse pointer changes to show a highlighter pen symbol.
Press Shift-Command-H on the keyboard. Choose Insert > Highlight from the Insert menu at the top of your screen.
If you want to highlight one word at a time, press Ctrl while holding down Shift , and then press Left arrow or Right arrow . If you want to highlight a whole line of text, move your cursor to the start of the line, hold Shift , and then press Down arrow . You may also use the shortcut key combination Shift + End .
Hold down the "Ctrl" key and the "Shift" key. Press the right arrow key to select the word to the right, or press the left arrow key to select the word to the left. Select one character at a time by holding down the "Shift" key and and using either arrow key (right or left).
Go to > System Preferences> General to see what is specified for your Highlight Color. Try selecting several different colors to see if it has any effect. You'll have to restart Word after each change.
