mobi files are an eBook file format created by the company Mobipocket for their Mobipocket Reader software. Amazon bought Mobipocket in 2005, and based the Kindle eBook reader's file formats ( . azw and . azw3 ) on the . mobi format.
It has been widely reported that since Amazon's acquisition of Mobipocket, software support, user support, and platform growth ended. In December 2011, Amazon reportedly officially notified the book publishers that it was ending support for Mobipocket.
For one thing, Amazon owns the MOBI/AZW3 format. No other retailer's system can read it.
Support for mobi files ends in 2022 ▸ This file format is sometimes called “Kindle format,” as Amazon Kindle is the only major ebook platform to still use it. All other ebook platforms, including Barnes & Noble Nook, Kobo, Apple Books, or Google Books, use the other ebook file format – epub.
Amazon has announced the retirement of its proprietary MOBI file format for eBooks, and a transition to the EPUB format for use on Kindle devices and apps. As of August 2022, you will no longer be able to send the MOBI file format to Kindles or the Kindle app using the Send to Kindle service.
MOBI and AZW are now outdated. Newer software features on Kindle devices and in the Kindle app will not work for these files. Any MOBI/AZW files already in your library will still exist and will still open, but may not have all features available as mentioned above.
