The staff with the snake has long been a symbol of medicine and the medical profession. It originates from the story of Asclepius, who was revered by the ancient Greeks as a god of healing and whose cult involved the use of snakes.
The past medical history (PMH) in contrast records information about the patients medical, personal and family history that might be relevant to the presenting illness or to provide optimal clinical management.
The Caduceus is a symbol of Hermes or Mercury in Greek and Roman mythology. Caduceus symbol is identified with thieves, merchants, and messengers, and Mercury is said to be a patron of thieves and outlaws, not a desirable protector of physicians.
The serpent-entwined rod is a fascinating symbol spanning both ancient and modern times, and it provides interesting evidence for the original biblical source account. The connections are clear: a snake-entwined rod, used as a symbol of healing, eventually becoming associated with pagan worship.
The snake figure was associated with Asclepios, the ancient Greek God of medicine, and possessed benevolent properties. It was believed to be able to cure a patient or a wounded person just by touch. The snake is also connected with pharmacology and antisepsis, as snakes possess an antivenom against their own poison.
The symbol originated by Asclepius is often confused with the Caduceus, which includes a similar staff or rod, with two snakes and wings, as shown in Figure 2. This symbol also has roots in Greek mythology as the symbol of Mercury or a messenger.
