While every web design contract varies depending on project needs, you should always include these key components: The parties involved. Scope of work. Payment. Feedback, revisions, and approvals. Termination of contract and lawsuits. Privacy and confidentiality. Ownership and work for hire. Warranties.
If the contract is silent on the matter, you may only make changes with the approval of the other party. Both parties must agree to the changes. Depending on the extent of changes, you may be able to simply amend the document. In this case, both parties must sign approval of the changes.
It is not illegal to alter a contract once it has been signed. However, it must be materially changed, meaning that if an important part of the contract is altered by the change, it must be made by mutual consent of both parties.
