Say you have a pdf, you open it up in the default app which is Preview. How do you now edit that pdf to create a new modified version? Well, the answer is you really dont. You dont edit a pdf. Instead you edit the source document. So heres what youve got. Youve got a pdf document opened up in Preview. You could do a lot of things with this pdf document. You can highlight it. You can annotate it. You can export it. You can even rearrange the pages. But what you cant do is actually edit the content of the document. To add new text to a PDF while using the Preview app: Select Tools. Select Annotate. Tap the text icon. Place your cursor on the PDF where you want to add new text. Type the text. Use the text icon to change the font, size, and style of the text.

Although you cant edit the text of a PDF in Preview, you can use the markup tools to provide feedback or write down something you want to remember. The editing tools in the Markup toolbar are ideal for collaboratinguse them to suggest changes to a PDF and to respond to suggestions.
The PDF is locked. If the owner of a PDF sets read-only restrictions, you cant apply changes PDF, be it in Preview or another app. There is, however, a way to check whether a PDF is locked and eliminate restrictions.
How to type on a PDF in Preview on Mac. Click the Show Markup Toolbar button. Click the textbox icon in the toolbar. Type your text. Drag the box to where you want it.
