eIDAS is shorthand for electronic identification and trust services. It refers to a range of services that include verifying the identity of individuals and businesses online and verifying the authenticity of electronic documents.
The eIDAS Regulation (910/2014) sets the legal framework for electronic signatures in the EU. It defines who can use electronic signatures and in what context. To ensure that electronic signatures can be created and validated anywhere in Europe, a number of standards were identified for their implementation.
An electronic signature is a legal concept that is defined in eIDAS by the following: electronic signature means data in electronic form which is attached to or logically associated with other data in electronic form and which is used by the signatory to sign; (eIDAS Article 3.10)
The eIDAS Regulation means that public sector organisations in EEA countries can allow people to access their online services using a national eID from another EEA country. Once a national electronic identification scheme has been recognised at European level, it can be used in other EEA countries.
