An ADA compliant PDF is a PDF which has been structured during its creation or edited to adhere to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards, such that it can be read or processed using assistive technology such as a screen reader.
A PDF document is considered truly accessible if it can be used/accessed by all users, including people with disabilities. For a PDF to be considered accessible, it should be compliant to accessibility standards, including WCAG 2.0, WCAG 2.1, Section 508 and PDF/UA.
To run the docHub Pro Accessibility Check on a PDF, select the Accessibility Tool in the Tools panel. Select Accessibility Check in the Accessibility Tool panel on the right. The Accessibility Checker panel on the left lists the 508 compliance issues.
PDFs do not need to be 508 compliant as long as they are accompanied by compliant, text-based versions of the document. The best text-based alternative is a regular (HTML) web page.
Converting to PDF Creating a tagged PDF is especially important for accessibility as it ensures that information about document structure such as headings, lists and alternative text will be available within the PDF document.
In PDF, the use of Span and Scope attributes of header cells allows us to make any table, regardless of its complexity, accessible without reformatting it (which is not always possible in Word). An accessible Word document does not allow for anchored images or objects.
What makes a PDF ADA Compliant? Some of the features of an ADA compliant PDF include: Searchable text o Note: PDFs created by scanning may actually be an image and not searchable text. o Alt text is hidden text used to describe an image to one visually impaired.
In this topic Best practices for making Word documents accessible. Check accessibility while you work in Word. Avoid using tables. Use built-in title, subtitle, and heading styles.
