Encryption is the process of taking a message and scrambling its contents so that only certain people can look at your message. There are two types of encryption: symmetric and asymmetric encryption. Lets first take a look at symmetric encryption to understand why asymmetric encryption was created. To do that, let me introduce you to Alice and Bob. Alice has a sensitive document that she wants to share with Bob. She uses an encryption program to protect her document with a password or passphrase that she chooses. She then sends the encrypted document to Bob. However, Bob cannot open this message because he doesnt know the passphrase that Alice used to encrypt the document. In other words: he doesnt have the key to open the lock. Now comes a real problem: how does Alice share this passphrase securely with Bob? Sending it through email is risky because others might find the passphrase and use it to decrypt any messages between Alice and Bob. This is exactly the kind of problem that

Adding an SSH Key Select SSH Key as the Credential Type. In the Credential Name field, enter the SSH key name. Select the user name as oracle or root. Select a credential value. If you select Enter Key, then you must specify the SSH public and private key pair required to access the VM instances.
Use the following OpenSSL commands to generate the key pair in the required PEM format. If you havent already, create an .oci directory to store the credentials: mkdir ~/.oci. Generate the private key with one of the following commands. Change the file permission to ensure that only you can read the private key file:
Public keys are available from a certificate authority, which issues digital certificates that prove the owners identity and contain the owners public key. Public keys are created using an asymmetric algorithm, which pairs the public key with an associated private key.
The initial password for the root role is solarisopc. Upon first logging into the root role you will be asked to change its password. This administrator performs storage-related tasks like creating, deleting, resizing, and cloning storage volumes. The default password for this account is solarisopc.
Choose the Public key tab. To copy the public key to your clipboard, choose Copy. To download the public key to a file, choose Download.
The public part of the key is saved in the idrsa. pub file, while the private part is saved in the idrsa file. Both files can be accessed from this location using Explorer: C:\Users\[your user name]\. ssh .
The public key is that which you send to servers for SSH key authentication. When you attempt to log in to that server, SSH will compare the public and private keys. If those keys are a match, youll be allowed access.
Add the Key to Your Instance On the Service Console of your cloud service, identify the service instance for wich you want to update the associated public key, click the actions menu. In the Add New Key dialog box, select Upload a New Public Key option and click Browse. Browse for you new public key and select it.
